April 18, 2008- Text messaging has become a normal part of daily business. Some people use text messaging for the completion of business transactions as well as for pleasure. However, this week one individual took such means of communication too far. An Iranian chess player was competing in a Dubai Open Chess tournament and was caught texting during the match. The chess player was receiving tips for his next moves from these illegal text messages. Because of the incident, the player was expelled from the tournament.
Apparently, the player was already near the bottom of the rankings in the tournament and was using his cell phone as a means to get ahead of the competition, however in this case it cost him his place in the tournament. When the player was confronted about using his cell phone during the match, he dropped it. Investigators found that he has received messages from a fellow Iranian who was advising the player on what move to make when as he was watching the live game from elsewhere.
Mobile devices can be a powerful ally in the world of business, however cheating is never acceptable. Tournaments such as these are an opportunity for competitors to show the world what they are made of and to showcase their skills. By cheating, the player was only proving he could cheat. It is very easy to cheat in this way, and this is the reason that places such as testing facilities often do not allow mobile devices at all. Officials are hopeful that such trends will not continue in the future.
