April 23, 2008- 2009 is close at hand and getting closer and DoCoMo announced yesterday that they will be getting ready to introduce an operator pack for FOMA 3G handsets that will be compatible with specifications established by the LiMo Foundation in the second half of the year. The LiMo Foundation is a group of global industry leaders who deliver open Linux-based software platforms for mobile devices. The new service pack will contain a Linux based operating system with software that implement i-node, i-appli and other unique DoCoMo services. This new service pack will also utilize existing technologies present in selected DoCoMo heandsets, such as some applications softwares and Mobilephone Oriented Application Platform (MOAP) middleware. Elements of Linux-version MOAP will also be included.
With the creation of this new operation pack will enable Japanese makers to market their handsets in countries overseas since they will now be equipped with global software. They will also be more able to create more unique products that satisfy the needs of more diversified customers. The new operator pack will also be compliant with established specs that have already bee established by the LiMo Foundation.
DoCoMo also plans to develop operator packs for other platforms such as the Symbian mobile software platforms. As leaders in the field, DoCoMo and the LiMo Foundation working together will offer users more options and compatibility than ever before in their handset models. DoCoMo plans to release these new handsets in late 2009.
