Motorola’s Future Looking Bleak?

Posted On April 30th, 2008. Written by info

Motorola was not glad to see their reports at the end of the first quarter of this year. They suffered a loss that was wider than they had initially anticipated for this year. Last week, Motorola reported that they lost $194 million during the first three months of the quarter causing their first quarter sales to drop to $7.46 billion, just shy of the projected sales figure of $7.75 billion. The first quarter losses totaled $418 million and sales plunged 39% to $3.3 billion. Phone shipments also suffered leaving Motorola with only a 9.5% share in the global shipment market. As a result of these decreases and losses, American Technology Research researchers estimate the company’s worth at $15 to $17 a share. Other research groups agree that the average price of Motorola shares are in fact close to these mid-teen amounts.

Some researchers believe that the worst is yet to some for Motorola, however. The Razr line, which was once a big seller and still provides 20% of sales, is slipping as well. During the fourth and first quarter of last and this year, Razr sales fell by 4 million units. Motorola is planning to introduce new phones with new features like messaging and touch screens in the near future in the hopes that these new style will catch the attention of the public and help to increase the sliding revenues.

Another problem for Motorola has been the recent activities of Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and Apple to push the market in North America. Nokia plans to work with service providers to provide more desirable services to customers, Samsung will be push new phone designs and Apple is launching a new version of the immensely popular iPhone.
