April 10, 200 8- Ever heard of smell-o-vision? Sounds like a thing of the future or something made up… right? Well, it looks like NTT is getting ready to pilot a sort of smell-o-phone. They are running test right now that will last until the 20th on a device that will allow users to sample scents via “fragrance playlists” and a device that works with their phone to essentially download scents. The way it works is that users can download a scent to their phone and the message will be sent to a device pre-loaded with base scents. The device then conjures up the fragrance and presto, you can sample the fragrance while enjoying the accompanying playlist being played on your phone! Frangrance Playlists can be edited to users custom preferences as well as shared with other subscribers.

NTT introduces downloadable fragrance playlists for your listening and smelling pleasure

During the pilot, several individuals will receive test module kits containing a mobile phone and a fragrance device. These individuals will then use the fragrance service for five days and upon completion, fill out questionnaires and attend group interview. Hopefully, through this process NTT will be able to find out what the public likes and dislikes about the service so that they can make the experience as pleasurable and convenient as possible before releasing it to the waiting public.

NTT will be accepting applications from companies that wish to begin producing their product. Other services included in users subscriptions will be downloadable ringtones, music, or horoscopes to be combined with a downloaded fragrance.
