March 27, 2008 - Recently, telemarketers have been targeting mobile phone companies and mobile phone providers are getting tired of it. Since the first of this year, over 2 million Verizon Wireless customers have received calls from telemarketers making bogus offers. This week, Verizon Wireless filed a lawsuit again such telemarketers that were offering their customers fraudulent extended warranties on cars. Verizon Wireless claims that these companies are using illegal techniques that violate the Federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act.

When users answered their phone when such telemarketers were calling, they were greeted with a pre-recorded voice information them, fraudulently, that their car warranty is about to expire. If the caller proceeds to follow the suggested steps, an operator asks for all their car information, but if the user becomes suspicious and starts to ask questions of the operator, their call is disconnected. If users miss the call and try to call back, they are informed that the number they have dialed has been disconnected. Affected area codes include 281, 614, 801, and 562.
The sad thing is that with telemarketers using more and more sophisticated means to harass their victims, many of them are getting award with such illegal activities right under the noses of authorities. However, whether illegal or not, many companies such as Verizon are tired of their customers being harassed for no reason. A users cell phone should not be a means for companies to invade their privacy and therefore become a cause of annoyance, it should be a convenience and a luxury.
