March 25, 2008 - Australian operator Hervey Bay’s Buzz Broadband was rumored to be Australia’s first WiMAZ operator, but unfortunately they have closed up shop already. The network turned out to be less than suitable for the kind of service the operator wanted to provide users. It has even been called disastrous and a miserable failure. Apparently, when the service was being tested, non-line of sight performance was only available up to 2 km from the base station. Also, performance indoors became non existent at only 400 m. With latency reaching only as high as 1000 ms, hoped for applications were not an option.
All is not lost though. Internode believes that there is still hope for WiMAX. An airspan-supplied network would be more likely to provide more consistent average speeds of 6 Mbps at more reasonable distances of up to 30 km. This more proven platform would allow users to access and use more services than before. So the question remains, with all these troubles and solutions floating around, how exactly will the Sprint network work?? Surely the answer to these and any other questions about the new service will be answered soon. Users can only hope for at least an Internode-like experience.
With all the services available to users today through several different networks and providers, we are sure that Sprint will be working out any kinks they feel will interfere with their users’ service. In order to compete in today’s mobile market, surely they will only offer this new service as soon as it is perfected.
