You just go into the music player and then long click on a song and select use as ring tone. You can also easily put songs on the phone when it is connected to your computer. You won't be able to add a song as a ringtone while your phone is connected to your computer.
To download songs to your G1, you just have to plug your G1 phone to your computer. After that, you will get a notification from the G1 saying that "USB is connected". Click at the top notification bar, then you will see a message asking you whether you want to mount your G1 to your computer. Choose "Mount".
After that, go to your computer, and browse to My computer. You should see a new drive pops up. The new drive is your microSD memory card inserted in the G1 phone. Drop your music to the drive, and you play your music using the default music player.
What you need to do is edit the phone number that you want to have different ringtone at the Contact program, then change the Ringtone to whatever you want.
