0 vote Nokia 96 vs I8510 GPS
Ok people.. need help how does the I8510 GPS compair to the Nokia 96 GPS? I've held both in my hand and still couldnt answer this question... The 96 GPS works great except I wasnt able to view the map in satellite view. That was my only complaint and it might have been me the user... However I had a harder problem even getting the I8510 GPS to work at all. How does it work? ON the 96 after you download the maps YOUR DONE NOTHING ELSE NEEDED! ON the I8510 do I have to keep downloading the damn map ever 7 days or something? Can I just download the whole world like I can on the 96? Also Can I download other software such as the n96 software onto the I8510 so that it works the same way with n96? somebody please answer me or message me... vipergtsdan@msn.com is my email or even call me 614-888-9000 Daniel
0 vote I don't think the i8510
I don't think the i8510 comes with useful navigational maps. Mine had Route 66 pre-installed but only a "World map" which doesn't include any streets. You can purchase them from the Route 66 store using either the phone (go to "Extras" in the main Route 66 menu) or via the Route 66 Sync app on a PC (download it from 66.com). I downloaded the full Australia map for $100 AU which is more than I really wanted to pay, but it does seem to be quite good. If you're in the eastern states you can get city-specific maps for a lot cheaper if you want to try it out.
The data you can download every 7 days is for speeding up the "time to first fix" of the GPS. Normally it'll take a few minutes for a GPS receiver to get an accurate lock on its position from a cold start; this small data file you can download using the GPS+ app contains the positions of the satellites and dramatically reduces the TTFF - seems to get a lock within 10 seconds for me.
For built-in or free stuff, Google maps can fix on your position as well, and amazegps.com has a free navigation program for Symbian smartphones; but both of these download the map as you go so they're not much use if you travel in areas without phone coverage or drive faster than your phone can download. I've read of some people having success with other programs, but Route 66 seemed the easiest to actually get going to me.

i bought this phone 2 weeks ago. My impression is this phone has a lot of multimedia features. What i love most is that i can watch my favorite DIVX/XVID movies in 7inch car tv using innov8 as a player. But i have to admit that nokia has a better GPS locking time than this phone. it takes 2-3 minutes to have GPS working but it took only several second to get my N82 AGPS working.
For Nav software i use garmin mobile XT and it works fine, but it draines battery faster than my N82..
Its 8.1 MP camera can work just like DSLR does, no kidding!
bassically this phone is fabulous.

It took me ages to get the internal GPS to work, but I find it locks on pretty quickly now. Under Settings / General / Positioning make sure you have Integrated GPS and Network based both enabled. Then under Positioning server make sure you allow it to use, and select an access point. Then if you go to Applications and run GPS+ you should be able to download the data file - it's very small, but you need to do it every 7 days which is a nuisance.
With that downloaded, the fix time seems pretty good. I just did a test by turning the phone off for a few minutes and then running the GPS Data application and going to the Position screen, and it had a fix within 10 seconds.
Without that data file then it's normal for a GPS to take a few minutes to establish its first fix.

hey i really want 2 get this phone but i have one question / problem. i have a mac... if i plug this into my mac will i b able 2 put music from itunes onto the phone???
0 vote For those having battery
For those having battery draining issues, you need to download jbak task manager and end the process called tsautostart or something like that after each time you use garmin.
Also, you can use torrent sights to download the maps, im using city navigator australia 2008.
dont waste your money paying for gps+, all it apparently does is speed up the connection, how ever that works...
